Okotoks Shockwave Therapy

The "Healing Window": Why Aftercare Matters

Shockwave Therapy is unique because it doesn't just "fix" the pain—it triggers your body’s own biological repair system. However, the first 48 hours following a session are critical. To get the best results from your investment, you need to support the inflammatory response that the treatment has just "re-started."

The First 48 Hours: The "Pro-Inflammatory" Phase

Immediately after your session at Dynamic Physiotherapy, you might actually feel a significant reduction in pain. This is a temporary analgesic effect caused by the acoustic waves. However, as this wears off, your body begins the hard work of tissue repair.

What to Expect:

  • Mild Soreness: You may feel a dull ache, similar to a "heavy workout" feeling, in the treated area.

  • Minor Swelling or Redness: This is a sign that blood flow is increasing to the damaged tissue.

  • The "Take it Easy" Rule: We recommend avoiding high-impact activities (like running or heavy lifting) for 48 hours to allow the tissue to settle.

The Golden Rule: Avoid Anti-Inflammatories (NSAIDs)

This is the most important instruction we give our Okotoks patients: Do not take Advil, Motrin, Aleve, or Ibuprofen for at least 48 hours after treatment.

Why? Shockwave Therapy works by creating a controlled "micro-trauma" that triggers a fresh inflammatory healing response. Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) shut down this inflammation, essentially "turning off" the healing signal the shockwave just sent.

  • If you need pain relief: Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is generally safe to use as it does not interfere with the inflammatory cascade.

  • Skip the Ice: Just like NSAIDs, icing the area can constrict blood flow and dampen the healing response. Stick to rest and light movement instead.

Weeks 1–4: The Cumulative Effect

Most patients require a series of 3 to 6 sessions, typically spaced 7 to 10 days apart.

Recovery is rarely a straight line. You may find that after the second or third session, your pain levels fluctuate. This is normal. Research shows that roughly 80% of patients report a significant reduction in pain after their third session. Each session builds upon the last, progressively "turning over" old, damaged tissue for healthy, new cells.

The Long Game: Maximal Recovery at 3 Months

While you will likely feel better within the first month, the biological "remodeling" of your tendons or fascia continues for several months. Maximal recovery—where the tissue has fully matured and strengthened—usually occurs around the 12-week mark.
