Stop Letting Jaw Pain Hold You Back
If you are struggling with TMJ dysfunction, you know it’s not just about the discomfort—it’s about the frustration of a joint that simply won't do its job. Many of our patients come to us after trying mouthguards or "waiting it out," only to find their daily activities are still being cut short.
You don’t have to settle for:
-
Difficulty eating certain foods because your jaw won't open wide enough.
-
The embarrassment of a loud "pop" every time you speak or chew in public.
-
Waking up with facial fatigue and a "stiff" feeling that lasts all morning.
-
The constant worry that your jaw might catch or lock at an inconvenient time.
What is TMJ Physiotherapy?
Restoring Function, Not Just Masking Symptoms
TMJ Physiotherapy is a clinical approach to treating the Temporomandibular Joint—the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull. This targeted therapy focuses on the mechanics of how you move:
- Restoring the "glide" of the joint disc for a wider, smoother opening.
- Releasing the deep muscles that cause that "tired" or heavy feeling in your face.
- Addressing the neck-jaw link to ensure your posture isn't pulling your jaw out of alignment.
It is a non-invasive, evidence-based alternative for those seeking to restore natural movement without relying solely on medication or dental splints.
How We Treat TMJ Dysfunction
Precision Manual Therapy for Your Jaw
TMJ Physiotherapist, Malyne Sean, uses a combination of precise, hands-on techniques to reset your jaw mechanics:
-
Intra-oral Myofascial Release: Gentle manual work inside the mouth to release the deep pterygoid muscles that external massage cannot reach.
-
Joint Mobilization: Skilled techniques to improve the "tracking" and alignment of the jaw.
-
Cervical Spine Integration: Treating the upper neck to reduce "referred" pain that often feels like an earache or a temple headache.
-
Trigger Point Therapy: Targeted release of muscle "knots" in the cheeks and scalp.
TMJ Conditions Treated at Dynamic Physiotherapy
-
Jaw Clicking & Popping: Restoring quiet, smooth joint function.
-
Limited Opening (Trismus): Helping you regain the range needed for normal eating.
-

-
Cervicogenic Headaches: Relief for headaches triggered by jaw and neck tension.

ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSIS
Frequently Asked Questions - TMJ
Yes. Jaw clicking is often caused by a misalignment of the TMJ disc or muscle imbalances. We use manual therapy and specific exercises to restore smooth joint tracking and reduce the sound and associated discomfort.
The muscles used for chewing (the masseters and temporalis) are closely linked to the nerves and muscles of the temple and neck. Chronic jaw tension frequently refers pain upward, causing what many call "TMJ headaches."
While night guards can help prevent tooth wear from grinding, they don't always address the underlying muscle dysfunction. Physiotherapy can be done alongside a night guard to treat the actual cause of the tension and pain.
Malyne will evaluate how your jaw opens and tracks, assess your neck alignment, and identify which muscles are contributing to your symptoms. If intra-oral release is appropriate, she'll discuss that with you before proceeding. You'll leave with a clear understanding of what's causing your pain and a treatment plan tailored to your specific presentation.
